The Software Engineering Institute’s (SEI) Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI®) is an internationally recognised process reference model that is used by many organisations worldwide to manage and maintain their key processes - those activities most crucial to satisfying their customers.

The CMMI® model comes in three variants (constellations):

  • CMMI® for Development constellation (CMMI-DEV) for organisations developing products and services
  • CMMI® for Acquisition constellation (CMMI-ACQ) for organisations who predominantly outsource product or service development
  • CMMI® for Services constellation (CMMI-SVC) for organisations who provide and maintain services.

The model consists of best practices, developed and optimised over many years of experience, and organised into appropriate process areas that address the various technical, management and support activities. Each CMMI® practice is described in detail with many helpful examples of typical sub-activities, methods, outputs etc. When applied as intended, the CMMI® model can be used to benchmark, assess and/or guide process health and improvement across an entire enterprise, or any smaller organisational scope (e.g. a department, programme or project), allowing staff to more effectively focus on the most important tasks and avoid unnecessary bureaucracy.
